$20,000 MISTAKE!!! Bad DIY Waterproofing Job on a Tiled Shower Pan
All too often homeowners don't take the proper steps when waterproofing their showers for tile installation. One missed step can lead to a catastrophic failure that requires the complete removal and replacement of the shower and plumbing.
Tile Redi pans eliminate the vulnerable failure points of other shower pan systems like Schluter Kerdi, RSS, Wedi, Hydroblock and Redgard. In those systems, the pan and wall connection is at or below the waterline of the shower and are often just connected in the field with sealant or thinset. Also, the drain is a separate piece and has to be secured to the pan with thinset or sealant. Installer error is common with these systems leading to catastrophic water and structural damage.
Tile Redi pans are one piece, pre-sloped, and have the drain integrated into the pan through the injection molding process. The integrated splash walls and curb make it so there are no connection points in the field at the vulnerable waterline.

How to TILE a SHOWER WALL --- Vertical Subway Tiles

Irregular zellige tiles are a popular choice for tile walls. Ceramic or porcealain tiles the most common types. When installing these tiles, special considerations are needed: 1.) The porcelain tiles can be cupped, warped, or bowed in the middle. Backbutteri...

When you don't have access from below, whether it be from a concrete slab foundation or a second story bathroom, the drain connection for a pre fomed tiled shower pan can be tricky. If you have to use a traditional PVC or ABS cement to connect the sewer pipe it makes it even more difficult becuase the pipe cement needs to be applied before the pan goes in and it can dry up if it is not connecte...
Waterproofing Curbless Shower --- New Flo FX Membrane!!!

Tile showers that have a curbless or barrier free entrance need to have the waterproofing extended out 12" past the threahold of the shower. In my opinion, sheet membrane is better than liquid applied membrane in shower pans for a three reasons: 1.) You do not need to wait for the mortar bed to dry before applying. It can take up to a week to for a mortar bed to fully dry before you can apply l...

Flo fx drain works very well. I ordered 1 from your website 1-2 yrs ago. There was a mix-up with shipping, and you drove it to my project. I've learned a lot about products, fail / no fail from your youtube channel. You provide a great service and teaching even for someone like me who thinks they know it all after 10 yrs doing remodels. I appreciate what you do. Side note; I haven't seen all of your videos, so I don't know for sure, but i've never seen you do any comparisons on foam board vs concrete board. I have seen you waterproof concrete fiber board and strengthen all the joints like I do with foam board. It's much easier to work with for me. Your thoughts?

I would still cut out the bottom 4"-6" of the marble and fill with tile (after doing proper waterproofing) for a baseboard effect. Go full Bob Ross, if you have to. If the wall plumbing needs fixing or replacing, do it from the other side of the wall. Redoing drywall will be way cheaper and easier than redoing the marble.

Nice guy! It's interesting how people have a go and it turns out that way. Massive respect for owning up to it. Mr Tile Coach well done for not making fun of him he had a go. I have seen many jobs with DIY 'ers and they would put some professionals to shame. This is not the case this time. Part of learning is to admit your work is wrong and let someone who knows what they are doing have a go and maybe learn from them.

I am NOT saying we have the right way to do shit where i live but, not removing the skirting board when renovating shit drives me absolutely nuts. The installation on them seems more permanent, i admit but still. I hate how things look when theyve been painted over a few times..

Though I started using it on the advice from my father for severe elbow pain, glucosamine chondroitin with msm also relieved my lower back pain that I began having when I was about your age. Took about three weeks to build up in my system, but it worked so well that I now recommend it to all my friends. Wasn't the expensive stuff they advertise now, just a plain supplement from the 'superstore'. I'm now 62 and still working remodeling houses pain free. Anyway, hope yours gets better and thanks for the great vids.

I've done the template method a few times but for me it just takes longer. One guy measuring and laying while another does the cutting is just as fast, even with complex layouts, and there's no chance of error. Let the surface be the template and just get it done.

Mastic mold is wild. I've ran into it a few times and damn, what a stench. I'm pretty confident you personally could cut that clean ~8" up all the way around. The risk would obviously be the removal considering natural stone can be very fragile. If you did manage to get it out, you could cut the strips into triangles or squares for resetting with a design. At that point, it's no different than other small format tiles meeting tubs or shower pans. Love the vids sir.

I know i am gonna take a lot of heat for this but....when i watch these kerdi shower install videos, I just cant understand why anyone would go through all of this, instead of ordering a custom fiberglass tileable shower pan. They are affordable and ready to go. I have used a few of them in my own projects and they installed in a few hours, including the waterproof wall panels. One piece pan, instead of all these steps, adhesives, felts, etc. Several years and no trouble from any of mine.
