$20,000 MISTAKE!!! Bad DIY Waterproofing Job on a Tiled Shower Pan
All too often homeowners don't take the proper steps when waterproofing their showers for tile installation. One missed step can lead to a catastrophic failure that requires the complete removal and replacement of the shower and plumbing.
Tile Redi pans eliminate the vulnerable failure points of other shower pan systems like Schluter Kerdi, RSS, Wedi, Hydroblock and Redgard. In those systems, the pan and wall connection is at or below the waterline of the shower and are often just connected in the field with sealant or thinset. Also, the drain is a separate piece and has to be secured to the pan with thinset or sealant. Installer error is common with these systems leading to catastrophic water and structural damage.
Tile Redi pans are one piece, pre-sloped, and have the drain integrated into the pan through the injection molding process. The integrated splash walls and curb make it so there are no connection points in the field at the vulnerable waterline.

How to TILE a SHOWER WALL --- Vertical Subway Tiles
Переглядів 12 тис.14 днів тому
Irregular zellige tiles are a popular choice for tile walls. Ceramic or porcealain tiles the most common types. When installing these tiles, special considerations are needed: 1.) Grout joints will vary, so diffent size spacers or wedges will be needed to tolerate the differnt size grout joints between each tile. 2.) The porcelain tiles can be cupped, warped, or bowed in the middle. Backbutteri...

When you don't have access from below, whether it be from a concrete slab foundation or a second story bathroom, the drain connection for a pre fomed tiled shower pan can be tricky. If you have to use a traditional PVC or ABS cement to connect the sewer pipe it makes it even more difficult becuase the pipe cement needs to be applied before the pan goes in and it can dry up if it is not connecte...
Waterproofing Curbless Shower --- New Flo FX Membrane!!!
Переглядів 20 тис.Місяць тому
Tile showers that have a curbless or barrier free entrance need to have the waterproofing extended out 12" past the threahold of the shower. In my opinion, sheet membrane is better than liquid applied membrane in shower pans for a three reasons: 1.) You do not need to wait for the mortar bed to dry before applying. It can take up to a week to for a mortar bed to fully dry before you can apply l...

Pre slope is for the moisture inside the pan you pour so it weeps out of the pan. A pan that holds water will cause mold issues. Hence the pan drying out via the weep holes. I dont think any new guys understand this.

Man, 13k for a small shower like that? No way. I think that's going way overpriced. I'm getting that bathroom down to studs and back together in less than a week. Material costs are high but how much are you putting on your man hours? $300 an hour?

Took us two weeks. 1 day dust containment set up and demo, 1 day rough plumbing and swapping out drain/drywall repair, 1 day straighten walls/install wallboard/float pan, 1 day waterproof pan/pick up tile/layout tile, 1 day flood test pan/finish texture repair to the walls/paint, 3 days set tile, 1/2 day finish setting tile with fast set, 1/2 day grout, 1 day trim out and clean up.

At the recommended rate-of-use, the applied thickness should be maximum 125 mils = 3.175 millimeters = 1/8". Your finished application of Redgard appeared to be less in areas. So, inconsistent thickness is one issue. Also, your dry pack was inside of an acrylic box, with only the top surface area of the dry pack exposed for evaporation. Using real-world material, i.e., cement board, plywood, etc, moisture evaoprates from both large surfaces of the dry pack, plus the sides. Those materials allow some path for evaporation; not much but some. The dry pack was not completely dry. Period. Then, when you poured water into the box you created a seal above the Redgard, which sandwiched that material between a still-evaoprating dry pack and full-contact water... no place for the evaporation to go other against the Redgard. The interface surface between the Redgard and the not-yet-dry dry pack prevented the Redgard from completely curing/drying.

24k is sickening for that lil area. The clown who says don’t hate on someone if they can make it how about don’t rob someone cause they don’t know or just cause they have the money. So we don’t go off ball park hours it takes to complete a job added up to get somewhat of a pricing? And I get if someone is a lil higher the others and that fine quality can be better they might be able to design bathroom and drawings but I don’t think time it takes and whatever else is no 24 k for that lil dump. No even with materials cause I can see those subway tiles don’t cost much on top of the other stuff. Don’t see no high end shower trim kit. That looks like off the shelf one. So I don’t see it at all

I’m a handyman and my work is top notch. I don’t think the quality of work has anything to do with the job title and everything to do with integrity, and only willing to deliver the best possible work. I rather make 0 profit in exchange of delivering quality work if it comes down to it. As an example this job you’re discussing was done by a “licensed Contractor”.

Question for the tile coach: My sister just bought a house of the same era, has the same 2x6 floor boards. They are installed on the entire house foundation which is the same as well, 4x6 girders 4ft on center, on posts sunk into concrete piers. Here is my question: What would one have to do to make this subfloor stable enough for tile floors? I was thinking of placing similar 4x6 girders the other direction and then hanging 2x6 floor joists on 14 or 16 inch centers. ????

    • @TileCoach
      @TileCoach День тому

Exactly! Or you can do double 2x6's from girder to girder and then hang a single 2x6 in between them. 24" oc is sufficient. Then use 5/8" plywood on top, then uncouping membrane on that.

I wish my installer had been as professional. Just took up a few floor tiles in bathroom and a ton of mould. They had ‘dot and dabbed’ porcelain (expensive!) floor tiles with about 65% 9pm what looks like ready mixed wall tile adhesive 😢. Plus it’s not even. Same person stuck a mirror on too and it nearly fell on me. In UK we don’t have licences for trades. I think we need to.

Didn't know what he was doing? On crystal meth? Both? Lazy? I think he decided never to buy another bag of thinset. HNonestly, I am guessing that he did know how to tile but was drunk or stoned or pissed off at the owner. He did the absolute bare minimum. Anyone who has ever hung big tile would know that what he did here is a bit of a miracle, getting all that tile up with so little of anything touching the walls. Yes, he was a seasoned tile guy but was somehow impaired or angry or suicidal or jacked up or performing his own little protest against the universe. Strannge indeed. But hey, I just watched tens of thousands of people drive at 80 mph exactly as this guy laid his tile.
